Sankranthi


                  Sankranthi is a very popular festival that is celebrated in India. This festival is well known as Makara Sankranti this falls on the 14th of January every year.The reason this festival been known as Makara Sankranti is that it coincide the journey of Sun towards the north and enter into Makara rasi(i.e. Capricorn) on 14th of January and the significance of this day is that the day and the night are of same time (i.e.12hr day and 12hr night), so this is considered as a very auspicious day.

                  This festival is celebrated in different ways in different parts of the country. Mainly in Andhra pradesh this is performed because the formers gets their first crop of harvesting for the year. This falls in winter the snowy season.The celebrations starts one month before the actual festival,This festival is been performed for 3 days mainly. The first day is called as "Bhogi" in the early hours of this day there will be a celebrations in the center of the village and in the country yards there will be big bonfires are lit and people will sit around that along with their friends and relatives and enjoy that in the cold winter and also singing some traditional songs. This tradition has been followed from so many years ago from the time of "Aryan's".

                   The second day is called "sankranti" on this day people perform the puja (worship), and the family diet will be the first crop of rice and pulses cooked in a mud pot with milk and jaggery after the puja, generally the festival is considered as a Rangoli festival As people start decorating their country yards with rangoli's from a month before the actual festival. There are some special rangoli's for the festival. The third day is called "kanumu" the final day of the festival. There are some special pujas are performed by the ladies apart from this puja there will be a family get-together where they exchange the special sweets and things (clay bangles, and haldi, kumkum that is considered as a tradition).As this festival is celebrated on the occasion of their first crop even the special sweets for this festival are made from the rice they are "Ariselu", "Boorelu", "Paramannam".

                   In Maharastra this festival is celebrated by exchanging the sesame seed laddu's these are made by combining the sesame seeds with jaggerry. Sesame seed contain lot of oil and they have a quality of softness in them. Therefore, firstly the use of sesame in sweets is good for health and secondly being soft. Their exchange means exchange of love and tender feelings. In Punjab this festival is called as "Lohri". As the months of December and January are the coldest months huge bonfires are lit on this eve and celebrated as "LOHRI". Rice and Sugarcanes are thrown into the fire. The second day is called as"Maghi"and they celebrate this by singing and dancing their famous "Bhangra". This festival is also known as "PONGAL" in south.
